About

WHO WE ARE County Law Libraries are public libraries providing access to legal materials to all who are interested. The collection, services and operation of county law libraries varies with each county, however, the mission of county law libraries remains the same: to provide free access to legal materials to all persons interested in the law. The directory on this site provides the most current contact information for all public county law libraries operational in California. If you live in a county where services may not meet your needs, remember you do not need to be a resident of the county in which a county law library is located in order to use it. Find your local law library here FUNDING California Business and Professions Code §§ 6320 – 6326 establish the funding of county law libraries through a portion of civil filing fees and set out the amount distributed to each. Usually, most income is derived from civil filing fees. Thus, libraries are supported by civil litigants, their primary users, and not by state and local taxes. Although, access to the law library in person is free, many county law libraries charge fees or fines to cover the cost of special services. The fees charged may be for copying materials, having materials faxed or mailed to you, or audio and video rental. This helps defray the cost of providing these services. During COVID-19 many county law libraries have reduced or eliminated these fees.
